Authors Note: The song in this story is "Standing Outside The Fire" by Garth Brooks. The events in this story are bent around a character but please note I used true events from my car accident for this story. This was a very hard story to write and it took me a long while to write it but here it is and I hope you all enjoy it. It may not be one of my better stories but I finished it anyway.
Dedication: This story goes out to everyone who was there for me and who is still here for me during this whole ordeal. Thanks guys and I love you so much.
Tommy smiled at Kim as she sped a long the highway. They were on there way home from yet another round of shopping. Tommy got in a more comfortable position in his car seat and shifted the magazine he was holding to his other hand as he prepared to read the next question to Kim. "Ok question six have you now or have you ever frenched a guy?"
Tommy smirked as Kim wiggled in her car seat and looked anywhere but at him "Once back in sixth grade. We were both curious so we did it. I felt really bad afterwards I swear!"
Tommy rolled his eyes as they pulled up to the stop light right outside their high school and stopped. He started unconsciously running the pen threw is fingers as he read the next question to himself and smirked. 'Oh this is going to get Kim!' He thought evilly to himself as he chuckled. He was about to ask the question when his pen slipped from his fingers and rolled under the seat. "Shit!" He cussed as he unbuckled his seat belt to retrieve the run away pen.
He felt a soft hand land on his arm, as he was getting ready to lean over "Tommy wait until we get to your house to get the stupid pen! It can wait! We are almost there! Buckle back up!" Kim demanded.
Tommy rolled his eyes "Kim we are stopped at a stop light I can get the pen and be back up before the light even turns green!"
Kim looked critical still as she said "Alright but hurry up the lights about to change."
Tommy smiled as he leaned over and felt under his seat for the small pen. His hand ran over it right as Kim said "Tommy the light is green I have to go."
"Go I have then pen go ahead." Tommy said as he grabbed the pen and felt Kim step on the gas.
Satisfied Tommy sat up with the black pen in his hand. He however did not have time to buckle up as he looked out his window and saw a black van-heading straight for them, not stopping. It all seemed to go in slow motion as he saw the van smash into his side, crushing his leg. He felt Kim's arm go over him protectively to keep him in the car as the pain shot threw his body. He felt the car start to swerve and go into a tailspin. All at once Kim's arm was gone and he felt his leg being ripped out of where it was trapped under the crushed metal of his door. The sound of shattered glass met his ears as he felt himself flying. The last thing he heard was the pain filled scream of Kim as he sank into darkness.
We call them cool
Those hearts that have no scars to show
The ones that never do let go
And risk the tables being turned
We call them fools
Who have to dance with in the flame
Who chance the sorrow and the shame
That always comes with getting burned
But you got to be tuff when consumed by desire
Cause it's not enough just to stand outside the fire
Kim was sobbing hard as she got out of the smashed car and ran to Tommy fear gripping her every since. She had seen him be thrown from the moving car and hit the phone pole head on. She saw the man that had hit her car all ready at him dialing 911 on his cell phone hurriedly. She turned away quickly as she saw the bloody form of her boyfriend. She started to sob hard as the man stuttered out "Oh my god I am so sorry. I...I didn't mean to I swear! My brakes gave and I was trying call the police but...but I was to late I...I am so sorry!"
Kim still sobbing and half listening to the man bent down over Tommy and started to shake him softly "Tommy...Tommy wake up! Wake up please! This...this is not funny open...open your eyes! I....I can't handle this!" She cried as she heard the ambulance sirens in the background and felt the mans arms circle her and try to comfort her.
We call them strong
Those who can face this world alone
Who seem to get by on their own
Those who will never take the fall
We call them weak
Who are unable to resist
The slightest chance love might exist
And for that forsake it all
Their so help and tom giving walking a wire
Life's not worth living if you stand outside the fire
Kim sat numbly in one of the hospital chairs beside Tommy in ICU. He had been in a coma for all most one month and not much had changed. They had done surgery on his leg, wrists, and head, which were all damaged in the crash. They were not sure if he was going to survive or not they were all most certain that if he did he was going to have some sort of brain damage. He had close calls while being there many of them and this only increased the doctors belief that he was not going to pull threw and if he did it would be a miracle in its self.
Kim honestly did not know what to think or believe he was only seventeen for god's sake; he had his whole life a head of him. Why was it snitched away from him so early in the ball game? Why? He had a lot of people that cared about him and needed him and relied on him daily so why was he not there anymore? Why was he not fighting harder to come back to them all? She didn't understand any of this or why it all had happened. She shifted her arm and took a sharp breath. She had been taken to the hospital along with Tommy and she had found out that when she had hit a tailspin her arm got caught in the steering wheel and it broke it in two places, it was funny she had not even noticed it until they had told her.
This did not even compare to Tommy's injuries however. When he had hit the phone pole he had his arms out in front of him, which had saved his life but had major repercussions all so. When his hands had hit the phone pole it had crushed his wrists and arm bones all the way back to his elbow. His elbows hand been slammed into his rib cage causing his ribs to crumble and one if them hit his lung bone puncturing his lung causing his air supply to be cut off. When this chain of events had taken place he had still hit his head hard on the pole and this is where the doctors got the fear that he would become a vegetable if he did indeed wake up. His right leg was crushed from where the black van had smashed into them on his side and it had been hurt worse when it had been ripped out of its holding place when he was thrown threw the windshield.
Kim quickly wiped away a stray tear this was all her fault. If she had made him buckle up then none of this would have happened. If she would have seen the van sooner or if she had just held on to him a little bit longer and not worried about the tailspin then she would have been able to prevent it. This was her fault that he was like this, it was her fault that he was in this bad of shape, it was her fault that he may have permanent brain damage and it was her fault the he might die. She looked back at Tommy's half bandaged face and cried out "Please Tommy please wake up!" Then she began to sob helplessly as she heard Jason enter the room and put a comforting hand on her shoulder as he to felt tears sting at his eyes for his fallen friend and teammate.
Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not trying it's merely surviving
You're standing outside the fire
Kim sighed as she watched Tommy's chest rise and fall. It was quickly approaching the second month mark of his coma. She wiped away a stray hair off his pale face and felt tears start to streak down her cheeks everyone had all most given up on him but she hadn't, she couldn't. She loved him too much to let him go, she knew him. She knew that miracles happen everyday so why couldn't one happen for him? If he just kept on fighting then maybe just maybe he would make it. His parents were tore up, his mom had a nervous break down and his dad had become a zombie for the most part. They had stayed by his side every waking moment until it just became to hard for them to see their son in this state. Everybody loved him and his room looked like a forest shop. She sighed as she rubbed her face with her hands. She had barely left his side threw out his coma she was so certain that he was going to wake up. He had woke up once all ready for about five minutes but the stupid doctors had made the mistake of taking the breathing machine off and he had slipped back into a even deeper coma.
Tears started to roll down her cheeks harder as she thought about all the good times they had together and how now maybe she would not have any more good times with him. Her head snapped over to where Tommy lay when she heard a moan, fearing that it was the beginning of another seizure. Her breath hitched in her throat when she saw Tommy's weak brown eyes looking at her. The moaning she heard was him trying to talk past the tube that was shoved down his throat. "Tommy." She whispered as she smoothed his hair back. She smiled threw her tears as he once again tried to talk and failed. She whispered, "I'll be right back." After saying this she quickly rushed from the room to get the doctor and tell him that her boyfriend was alive and awake, this time forever.
There's this love
That is burning deep in my soul
Constantly urning to get out of control
Wanting to fly higher and higher
I can't abide standing outside the fire
Tommy sighed as he looked out his hospital window into the bright sunshine. He wanted to go outside so bad. He had not felt the sun on him in two months and he wanted more then anything to feel it. He looked back towards the TV and switched it off with a huff. There was absolutely nothing on daytime TV he had come to find out rather quickly. He moaned as a wave of pain went sailing threw his head. He had been awake for two weeks and for the most part he did not even remember the first week. The thing he hated the most was he could not feel his right leg at all and even he knew that this was not good. He had the big bulky white casts that had covered his wrists and arms up to his elbows, which he hated taken off the day before. He constantly had headaches and some were major. Every now and then he would have trouble breathing and they would have to put a breathing mask back on him, which he all so hated with a passion. He would get confused easily now and his memory was worse then it had been before, but for the most part he had to confess he was better off then anyone thought he would be.
Tommy smiled evilly as an idea came to him that would more or less get him into big trouble. Putting it into action he uncovered himself and with a lot of time and effort worked himself into his wheelchair and wheeled himself over to his door. Looking both ways and seeing the cost was clear he darted out into the hall and moving quickly got to the balcony entrance. Smiling he opened it and rolled out onto the balcony. When the sun hit him his smile broadened. 'God I had forgotten how good it feels in the sun and how beautiful everything is.' Tears began to sparkle in his eyes 'I'm alive.'

Tommy threw his school books on the floor of his room and using his gray walking sticks as he called them slowly got over to his bed and more or less fell onto it. It was his first day back at school and it was a ruff one. 'Well at least I can feel my leg again...and that's a good thing because?' He winced as another shot of pain shot threw it. It had been three months since it had happened and everything had changed for him. The doctors were not sure that he would ever practice martial arts again and his substitute on the team would more then likely become his replacement as the white ranger. He was not so sure that he could pull the eleventh grade out of the hole it was in and get all his work made up in time to pass. Everyone was pressuring him to do so much more then he ever did and he didn't know how to tell them all that he just couldn't do it.
There were days when he would just not get out of bed his leg hurt do bad and then there were the god awful nightmares that plagued him all most every night. Ones of him seeing the black van plowing into them of feeling his leg being crumbled, he shook as his mind turned away from this very quickly and he thought of Kim. She was the worse of all his worries she blamed herself for what had happened and he did not know how to tell her that it was not her fault. It was no one's fault it just happened and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time was all. He sighed heavily 'I have to get out of here.' He desperately thought as he slowly got to his feet and grabbed his gray sticks and made his way out of his house and down the driveway.
He ended up at the lake and managed to climb onto his thinking rock and as the sun was just starting to set. After seeing this a feeling of great calm set over him, as he just knew everything was going to work out 'I'm alive...I'm really here and I'm going to be ok.' His smiled brightly as he felt that he once again he had is whole life a head of him and any thing was possible he had shown every one that miracles did happen. With a bright smile on his face and tears sparkling in his eyes he watched as the sun lit up the sky with multi colored rays then slowly sunk beneath the horizon.
